Steffie Woolhandler and David Himmelstein published a nice article on health care reform in the Annals of Internal Medicine titled "Single-Payer Reform: The Only Way to Fulfill the President's Pledge of More Coverage, Better Benefits, and Lower Costs". Both Woolhandler and Himmelstein have been writing about these issues for years and they are considered leaders in their field. They are good names to look for if you are researching ideas on how to make health care both more effective and efficient. They run the group Physicians for a National Health Program, which is not only a great resource on health care reform, but also has links to potential speakers.

I'm pulling this nice summary from Min. I'll post the report in our Issues/Resources Page too.
RESOURCE: Congressional Budget Office Cost Estimate for American Health Care Act (H.R. 277) The CBO released its cost estimate for the AHCA yesterday afternoon, released in this summary document. Let's use it. Here are some key takeaways and numbers:
Last Saturday (March 11) Leslie Danks Burke, lawyer and former candidate for State Senate, Brigitt Schaffner, President of the local chapter National Alliance on Mental Illness, and Tammy Orlopp, Program Director of Prevention and Treatment Seneca County, held a health care forum to discuss the impact of a possible ACA repeal on Central New York communities. You can listen to a recording of the forum here. Tom Reed finally held a town hall meeting in Ithaca! People began lining up to get into the town hall at 4am on a bitterly cold Saturday. The photo below of people waiting to get in was taken before 7am! Estimates put around 400 people inside, and there were at least another 200-300 people outside. Many, many thanks to the Southside Community Center for hosting and organizing this event! They rent out their space, and they are a great local center to support...so get on it folks! The ACA was the biggest topic, and Reed was shockingly unconcerned about the thousands of people in his district who will lose healthcare coverage if the ACA is repealed. Either he just doesn't get it or he's just too committed to partisan politics to drop this repeal without a real alternative. Big shout out to Nia Nunn for organizing, for keeping the conversation on track, and for putting the issues in context and pressuring Reed to address how his voting record and actions have hurt real people in our communities! Reed ended his town hall by saying "Black Lives Matter," and many thanks to all of you for being there to put the pressure on him in that moment so that he would stand up for what should be the bare minimum of human decency.
Way to go on everyone who showed up last week to write letters in support of immigrant and refugee rights!!! We know that was a busy day, but we still had 12 people show up and wrote 23 letters and 7 post cards! These letters were mailed out last Wednesday and as you hear back from your Representatives feel free to let us know and we will post them on our blog. Feel free to borrow the scripts we used to write letters for this action.
We met on Feb 28th and called our representatives, committee members, and the House and Senate leadership about protecting the ACA! Great job everyone! Together we made 72 calls in 1 hour!!!! We even had a few people make it through to Mitch McConnell! Feel free to use the scripts we prepared to aide our call in.
